A new 650-room micro-hostel has been given the green light to open in Central London. 92 Dean Street Opco Limited plans to open its doors as an ‘affordable option for young travellers’ by offering single and double-bed spaces.
The size of each unit has been likened to flying business or first class, with each room containing only a bed. Communal showering and toilet facilities will also be available for guests. It was also granted permission to serve alcohol through vending machines at the venue by Westminster City Council.
But the Metropolitan Police opposed the plans, arguing it would lead to more crime and disorder. In the application report, PC Tom Stewart rose concerns over the installation of ‘alcohol vending machines’ at the site.

Addressing Westminster’s licensing committee on behalf of 92 Dean Street Opco Limited on Thursday, Alun Thomas said that the machines will use AI technology to ensure a guest is over 18. He claimed that the vending machines on the bottom floor of the hostel will only be available to guests and will serve wine, beer and cocktails.
During the meeting, the council questioned the accessibility to spirits and whether that would raise issues. But the applicant dismissed the worries and joked: “We’re potentially trialling a cocktail but it’s not traditional, there’s no shaking and so forth.”

To which a committee member responded: “No ice and lemon? Gin and tonic?” Hot food and coffee will also be available through the vending machines.
The plans passed despite opposition from the Met and some residents who argued the sale of alcohol would create too much noise and disruption. One objector stated that it has become ‘increasingly difficult’ to be a resident of Soho due to the ‘over-saturation of liquor licenses’.
But those in support slammed the protesters and stated that ‘most hotels serve alcohol so why should this be any different’. The license has been granted with numerous stipulations, including strict rules around off-site drinking and ensuring the capacity of the venue is monitored.
91-92 Dean Street is around 100 metres from busy Oxford Street and a short walk to Tottenham Court Road station.
