A flight attendant has taken to TikTok the share the meaning behind a small icon commonly found on aeroplanes that has left tourists baffled.
The TikTok user @_hennylim_ regularly posts short videos to the social media platform to share tips that can help tourists during their time on board a flight and showcases some of the interesting things she gets up to whilst travelling.
In a popular video, Henny highlighted why some seats on a plane have a small, black triangle located above the window.
She explained: “If you notice a black triangle sticker inside an aeroplane, here’s the secret behind it. One, passengers sitting next to the triangles get the best view of the wings.
“Two, if [the] flight crew need to check the wings, these triangles let them know the best vantage points for the slats and flaps outside.”
In the video, Henny noted that the small icon can identify the closest row of seats to the wings, helping members of staff check the condition of the plane’s wings.
Whilst modern planes have a plethora of digital gauges and sensors, if something fails, the pilot will call a cabin crew member to check the levels of the trailing edge flaps.
The sticker can also be incredibly helpful for members of staff preparing the plane for flights in low temperatures, identifying which windows need to be de-iced to assess the wings.
However, Henny also suggested that the seats featuring the black triangles can make for the perfect social media shots as the plane flies over destinations.
She continued: “If you’re flying [with] an airline that allows you to choose your own seat, look for one of the triangles in the cabin [next to the seat].
“Anyone who loves taking window shots or videos will get the best view over the wings from these seats.”
Sometimes, the row of seats next to the black triangle are humourously referred by travel experts to as the ‘William Shatner seats’.
This is due to a 1960s episode of The Twilight Zone in which the popular actor imagined that there was a gremlin sitting on one of the planes wings.
Whilst it is incredibly unlikely that passengers will find any goblins accompanying them on their flight, they can take comfort in sitting in one of the most famous spots on a passenger jet.
