Jews are arriving in Riga from all parts of Russia, driven out by the new campaign of terror which the newly formed Ogpu (Unified State Political Department) is conducting. It is reported today that Archbishop Illarion, the Patriarch Tikhon’s intimate assistant, with numerous other of the Patriarch’s adherents, has been arrested. Ostensibly the Archbishop’s offence is that in an appeal to the people he deprecated the holding of religious debates in the churches which, he said, often led to blows and bloodshed, and declared that politics were a layman’s evil, and had nothing in common with the true faith.
