More details have emerged after a plane crash landed in North Yorkshire, seriously injuring the pilot and his passenger.

Emergency services raced to the scene after the light aircraft landed on its roof at Leeds East Airport, in Church Fenton, North Yorkshire, at 5.10pm yesterday. North Yorkshire Police issued a statement at 10pm last night confirming two men in their 70s had been rushed to hospital and an investigation into the crash had been launched.

Today, more details have been released by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, who also attended the scene, which is 16 miles outside of Leeds. In a statement, they confirmed that the plane was a light fixed-wing aeroplane and that it had landed on its roof after getting into difficulties in the sky.

Crews from Tadcaster, Selby, Acomb and York responded to the 999 call and gave first aid to the men until paramedics from Yorkshire Ambulance Service arrived.

In a statement, the fire service said: “Crews from Tadcaster, Selby, Acomb and York responded to a report of an aircraft that had crashed. Crews located the light fixed wing aircraft that was on its roof. Crews provided initial first aid assistance to 2 casualties until the arrival of ambulance crews.

“Both casualties were handed into the care of paramedics and transported to hospital. Crews assisted in making the aircraft safe. The incident was left in the hands of the police and airport management company.”

Meanwhile, Leeds East Airport, which is home to the Church Fenton Aeroclub, has confirmed it is closed today following the crash. They said they could not give any more details about the crash.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service have also been contacted for comment.
