Private Jets

Companies, entrepreneurs, public figures and celebrities as well as private individuals all appreciate the individuality and flexibility that air travel in a private jet offers compared to regular scheduled flights. It is also fast, safe and economical. Almost all destinations can be reached at short notice with an air charter flight in a rented jet.

Single Entity Charters

There are a number of different types of air charter flights, and knowing what they are can help you understand the terms you use when booking a flight. These include single entity charters, affinity charters and special event tours.

Single entity charters occur when an individual or company contracts and pays for the operation of an entire airplane, as opposed to selling seats on the airplane to individuals. For example, a professional basketball team may charter an airplane to fly the team and their accompanying staff to games.

Affinity Charters

When a club or other organization arranges a charter flight for its members, the price of each ticket must be the same for each adult member of the group. Affinity charters do not have the consumer protection provisions of public charters.

Affinity charters are not subject to DOT’s tarmac delay rule, which applies only to public charter flight operations that experience a tarmac delay at a U.S. airport.

For passengers traveling on a public charter flight that experiences a tarmac delay, DOT’s tarmac delay rule requires that a public charter operator provide facilities and services that are typically provided by a direct air carrier for all passengers who are traveling on the same flight. These requirements can be complicated, so it’s important to know how they apply to your particular trip.

If you have questions about the tarmac delay rules and whether they apply to your charter flight, contact DOT’s Customer Service Center for assistance. You can also read the DOT’s tarmac delay webpage.

The DOT’s tarmac delay rule is designed to protect all air travelers, including those with disabilities. It requires that airlines operating direct charter flights (air carriers) comply with the Air Carrier Access Act and DOT’s disability regulations, which govern how they must serve passengers with disabilities on their aircraft.

Special Event Tours

The Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA) makes it unlawful for an airline that sells tickets on a public charter flight to discriminate against passengers who have a disability. DOT’s disability regulations require that air carriers accommodate disabled passengers on their aircraft, and DOT enforces the ACAA and its implementing regulations.

If you have questions about the Air Carrier Access Act or whether a public charter flight will be accessible for passengers with disabilities, you should speak with an attorney or other legal expert before you book your next trip. You can find more information about the laws and regulations that apply to air transportation for people with disabilities on the DOT’s website.
